FROM ADAM’S RIB TO CHINESE CREPE: THE HISTORICITY OF MISOGYNY AND FASHION AS A DEVICE OF VIOLENCE IN THE GREAT GATSBY

Abstract

 This research analyzes the descriptions of the female characters Myrtle, Jordan, and Daisy in the novel The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, from a feminist and clothing-related perspective, identifying garments and descriptions as indicators of misogyny and social class. The study is based on a historical framework concerning misogyny, articulated with the novel and Fitzgerald’s relationship with his wife, Zelda Sayre. In addition, it considers the context of the Jazz Age and the rise of feminism in the 1920s, a period marked by transformations in women’s clothing. The theoretical foundation is based on feminist works on intersectionality, marginalization, and performativity, such as those by bell hooks, Judith Butler, and Kimberlé Crenshaw, as well as studies on the social character of fashion proposed by Lars Svendsen and João Braga. The research adopts a qualitative, bibliographic, and documentary approach, carrying out an interpretative-analytical analysis of the literary text in light of the theoretical frameworks, with the aim of observing the articulation between fashion, gender, power, class, and resistance.
